About
Dr. Sandra Shead
I have many years of bedside nursing experience in the neonatal and adult critical care. I have also gained extensive leadership and education experience in the civilian and military healthcare environments. I also have professional writing experience. However, I am brand new to blogging! I am hoping we can work together, collaborate, and learn more about empowerment together.
I believe in lifelong learning and continue to gain new information and insight after earning a PhD in nursing education. In addition, I am passionate about nursing and working with nurses to improve patient outcomes through empowerment. Nurses are in a unique position to influence change at both the bedside and policy-making levels. Currently, nurses are dealing with the increasing complexity of patient care, staffing shortages, changes in technology, mandatory overtime, and caring for patients with highly contagious and potentially life-threatening diseases. As a result of caring for patients with these current trends, it is understandable that burnout and retention pose further challenges in the nursing workforce.
I believe that nurses should be more than just providers of care. They should also be change agents to make a real difference in the quality of care that patients receive. With Nurse Empower, you can learn about the concept of empowerment and how it manifests, or should manifest itself, in the workforce. Hopefully, you will gain the necessary knowledge and skills to become a more effective advocate for your patients and nursing practice.
Nurses need to understand that collectively, they have a powerful voice. By using this blog to gain knowledge and skills, you can share your stories and help shape the narrative surrounding the nursing profession. You can share your successes, challenges, lessons learned, and the joy and triumphs of being a nurse.
Mission
Here at Nurse Empower, my mission is to empower nurses to become leaders and influence policy-making and practice at the bedside and beyond. Nurses will learn the types of empowerment they may experience every day and how they can have input on workflows and other decisions typically made by administrators. I will also guide you through how nurses can influence and drive change at all stages of the lawmaking process. Let’s have our voices heard!
